Further Information: Lovely sepia postcard of the Old Toll Bridge across the River Ouse, in North Yorkshire It was opened in 1793, and had to be able to be opened to river traffic in less than a minute. For this reason it was designed with a horizontal rotating section - a swing bridge. The bridge was closed in in 1968 after being damaged by a boat. It was re-built in 1969, and finally stopped taking tolls in 1991.
