Further Information - Known as "the Great Bridge over the Rhine" which was completed in 1898, it had the longest 'through arch' in the world at the time. It was destroyed in 1945 by the Wermacht as a futile attempt to stop the Allied forces advance though Germany. A replacement bridge was opened in 1969, and this was called the "Kennedy Bridge" in memory of J.F.K. who was assassinated in 1963. The section on the left is a 'truss arch' bridge.
