Information - This is a real photograph of the S.S. ALCANTARA - not to be confused with the R.M.S ALCANTARA which followed it nearly 10 years later. The S.S. ALCANTARA undertook her Maiden Voyage from Southampton to Buenos Aires in 1914. In 1915 (with the onset of WW1) she was converted into an Armed Merchant Cruiser, now called H.M.S. ALCANTARA. Early in January 1916 she was attacked and sunk by the German Merchant Raider "GREIF" with the loss of 72 men. The GREIF, in turn, was quickly sunk by Allied naval forces. A quite rare photo of this short lived vessel.
