Further Information - The building was built in Hyde Park and commissioned for the Great Exhibition of 1851. It was the largest building ever constructed of glass and metal only. The exhibition was a great success, after which it was decided to move it to Sydenham, where it was re-constructed to an even large and more fanciful design. It lasted there from 1855 until it was destroyed by fire in December 1936.
