Further Information: The Monks were expelled from France in 1793 and their property seized by the Government. Less than 50 years later they were back. They were expelled again in 1903, but were back again around 1927, and continued with the production of Chartreuse. In 1935 a severe mudslide completely destroyed the monastery and the Monks were homeless again. As a gesture of goodwill the French Government had a new monastery built in Voiron (28 miles away) and production continues there until this day.
