|Location - The
TRANSPORTER BRIDGE, ROCHEFORT to MARTROU, Charente-Maritime, France.
- (Pont à Transbordeur). A very rare type of suspension bridge with
only about 23 ever having been built in the world plus one at
Bordeaux for which only the towers were built. The Rochefort to
Martrou bridge had an overall length of 175 metres crossing the
River Charente. It was built to the design of Ferdinand Arnodin and
was completed in 1900. It continues in use until today, but only
during the summer months. In 1967 its regular use was discontinued
in favour of the new Lift Bridge, which in turn was superceded by a
new conventional bridge in 1991.
