Further Information - Work started in 1833 and continued for nearly 30 years before completing the bridge. It's aim was to provide more water in the Nile delta for agricultural purposes. It wasn't a success. Further work in the 1880's met with great success. The two towers are linked by a double bascule bridge for pedestrian traffic. It appears that this is the entry to the lock allowing shipping to reach a lower level. It has now been replaced by a new dam.
