HIRAM MAXIM'S CAPTIVE FLYING MACHINE to give it its full title was
aimed at giving the public an experience of flying - one of his own
obsessions. It was a great success for many decades and has modern
counterparts in many fairgrounds today. The WATER CHUTE was opened
in 1903, but didn't last as long as the Flying Machine.
